Worshipful brothers Mike Egan and Tony Oliver
They met through the Lodge and have been friends for forty years.

Worshipful Brother Tony Oliver receiving his 50th year in Freemasonry certificate from our A.P.G.M W.Bro Tony White

Installation 10th October 2018

The Installation of Brother David O'Neill into the Chair of King Solomon was a splendid occasion with W.Bro. Robbie Shurmer coming over from his home in Spain to install our new master.

Not only did Robbie install David but gave the address to the Master and also the toast to the Master at the festive board.

The menu chosen by David and the quality of the food were truly excellent.

David invested his officers and conducted the business of the lodge with his usual style and aplomb.

The working tools were explained in an excellent manner by brothers Keith Hudson, Alan Honey and Craig Bliss.

The addresses to the Wardens and Brethren were expertly delivered by Worshipful Brothers Trevor Jewell and Ken Jordan.

Brother Arran Harding performed a wonderful and emotional Masters Song for David who tested the tables strength to its limit.

All of the officers of Shoeburyness Lodge will be supporting W.Bro David in his year as Master and are looking forward to a fantastic year under his leadership.

Davids charity during his year is the very worthy R.N.L.I.

Installation 11th October 2017

The Installation of Brother Tony Oliver into the Masters Chair was a very special event in the Shoeburyness Lodge's history as it had only taken him forty nine years to go from initiate to Worshipful Master. The ceremony was conducted by our installing master W.Bro Ian Hunt in splendid fashion assisted by W.Bro Robert Mount with Brothers David Oneill, Alan Honey and Arran Harding explaining the working tools in an excellent manner.

The worshipful Master invested his officers including W.Bro Roy Bryant as his Director of Ceremonies.

There was an excellent festive board and it was the last official visit of our outgoing APGM W.Bro Robert Wittingham.

The masters song was sung by our newest brother Arran Harding in a brilliant manner especially considering he had only a couple of weeks to learn it.We have a full years work ahead with a 2nd, 1st and third degrees.

Everyone at Shoeburyness Lodge will be supporting W.Bro Tony in his year as Master and are looking forward to a fantastic year.

Installation 12th October 2016

My, how time flies, Wednesday 12th October saw the start of another Masonic year with the Installation of the new Worshipful Master. Regretfully our IPM was not able to be with us, through illness, his place being ably taken by W.Bro Robbie Shurmur, assisted by the three junior Brethren. Bro’s Mike Darling, Alan Honey and Tony Lowe, delivered the 3rd, 2nd and 1st degree working tools in an exceptional manner.

A fine meal at the festive board was enjoyed by all, who were once again treated to a very fine rendering of the Masters song by W Bro Richard Jordan.

The Worshipful Master is now looking forward to a very busy year, there being first, second and third degrees in November, February and March respectively

Installation 14th October 2015

The second Wednesday in October is always a special occasion for Shoeburyness Lodge as it marks the beginning of a new Masonic year with the Installation of the new Worshipful Master. This year was no exception albeit it was a double celebration. Firstly W Bro Trevor Jewell expertly installed his successor Bro Roy Kevin Blyther into the chair of King Solomon ably assisted by the three junior Brethren, Bro’s Tony Lowe, Craig Bliss and Mike Darling, who delivered the 3rd, 2nd and 1st degree working tools and also some very fine addresses. W Bro Kevin did a first class job investing his officers.

Following the Installation W Bro Robert Whittingham, our Assistant Provincial Grand Master, had enormous pleasure in presenting to his friend of over 40 years, W Bro Derek Childs, his 50th Anniversary in Freemasonry Certificate. W Bro Robert spoke of W Bro Derek’s past both personally and Masonically and handed him a letter for the RW Provincial Grand Master.

W Bro Kevin then invited W Bro John Seyfried to present the dual gift from both Shoeburyness Lodge and our Daughter Lodge Rochford Hundred Lodge No 8922. We were honoured with not only the presence of W Bro John Seyfried but 7 other members of Rochford Hundred Lodge of which W Bro Derek is a founder member. W Bro Derek was quite taken back by the occasion and thanked W Bro Robert and all the Brethren present.

At the close of the meeting 56 dined together and were given a treat with W Bro Richard Jordan giving an virtuoso performance of the Masters song.

Charity Dinner 20th September 2015

On Sunday 20th September, we meet for the 2nd year at Garons Park Golf Complex, Southend, for the annual Almoners lunch. 55 Brethren, partners and friends attended and raised an excellent £342.50, which will be used to support the lodges widows.

Fine weather outside, was mirrored by the atmosphere inside. The President thanked all present for their generosity and hoped to see them again next year.

LoI Dinner 8th April 2015

Wednesday 8th April, saw 16 lodge members sit down to dine at the Pipe of Port, Southend. This now annual event, is to celebrate another very  successful LOI season. Copious amounts of wine and beer were consumed and we eventually left at closing time,  refreshed and determined to do it all again next year.

Ladies Night 18th April 2015

Saturday 18th April 85 members and their guests gathered at the Arlington Rooms, Chalkwell for the W/M. Trevor Jewells, Ladies Festival.

Introductions were made to the W/M and his Lady, Anthea, by our very own Toastmaster Bro. Michael Darling, who very expertly took us through the evening. We sat down to an excellent three course dinner at 7.30, during which we were entertained by Loraine on the Grand piano, playing easy to digest music, interspersed by toast's , speech's and a presentation to Anthea, on behalf of the members of the lodge.

Dinner over, tables cleared , we were treated to a master class of ballroom dancing by Louise and Jessica. Then on to the main entertainment of the evening, provided by Dusty Eggshed, a five strong group of vocals and instruments , playing all those hits that made you just want to get up and dance. Whilst the group took a well earned mid session break we held a raffle and auction that raised £500.00 for the W/M charity, The Music Man Project.

Carriages at 12.15am and home, a very enjoyable evening, can't wait to see what our incoming Master has in store for us in 2016.

Lodge Meeting Wednesday 11th February 2015

W Bro Martin Sanderson had great pleasure in presenting a cheque for £2,000 to the Southend branch of the RNLI, which was gratefully received by Bro Matt Crow of Canute Lodge No. 3104.

Bro. Matt has nearly 20 years experience at the helm of Southend's lifeboats and he gave a short talk to the brethren about the work carried out by Southend RNLI with some interesting anecdotes.

W Bro Martin expressed his thanks to the members of the Lodge for their very generous support of his Master's List during his year.

Initiation 12th November 2014

Wednesday 12th November, 2014 was our Worshipful Master, W Bro Trevor Jewell, first working meeting of the new Masonic season and what better way to kick it off than with initiating Mr, now Brother, Michael Darling, into the family of Freemasonry.  The day was enhanced by the presence of our old friend and once regular visitor and now our Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Robert Whittingham.  Bro Michael was treated to a first class initiation by the WM ably assisted by all his officers particularly Bro's David O'Neill the Junior Deacon, Tony Lowe, the inner guard and Bro Craig who presented the working tools.  Bro Michael also had the privilege of having his friend and proposer, Bro Kevin Blyther, deliver his part of the charge in a perfect manner with W Bro Robbie Shurmur finishing it off beautifully.

The meeting was also enjoyed by W Bro Len Johnson from Wrexham who had contacted the secretary through the Lodge website asking if he could join us as he was going to be in Shoeburyness visiting his Mother.  W Bro Len was joined by a further 16 guest who all sat down and enjoyed each others company at the festive board which was finished off by the DC performing what we call Chugga Butty but is really 'The Mother Lodge' by Rudyard Kipling' when he gave the Tylers toast.

Brethren I urge you to keep a watchful eye for prospective candidates for our wonderful order.

Installation 8th October 2014
Wednesday 8th October 2014 was the start of the new Masonic year for Shoeburyness Lodge with the Installation of W Bro Trevor Jewell.  The Installing Master WBro Martin Sanderson turned in a sterling performance and should be rightly proud of his role in the ceremony. It was also good to see 2 Grand Officers 'come off the bench' W Bro Derek Childs as acting Junior Warden and W Bro Ken Jordan as firstly Senior Deacon then acting as Inner Guard.

Once W Bro Trevor had been installed and after a tea break the new Worshipful Master invested his officers and two fine addresses were given by W Bro Rob Shurmur, to the Wardens, and WBro John, aka the Silver Fox, Cooke to the Brethren. The Lodge was pleased to welcome 6 reigning Masters from other Lodges and 2 visiting Secretaries one being our old friend and regular visitor W Bro Jim Parker.  At the close of the meeting 40 Brethren dined in the most convivial company.

Charity Dinner 21st September 2014

Sunday 21st September, saw 51 Brethren, Companions, partners and friends; gather for a three course Sunday lunch at Garons Golf complex, Southend.

As per usual this proved a very harmonious occasion, helped no doubt by consumption of the odd glass of wine. The raffle, in aid of the Almoners fund raised over £300.00, which was further boosted by a generous donation, by Bro Craig Bliss, of a Thames river cruise, complete with cream tea, which raised £40.00 when auctioned.
Our President Bro Kevin Blyther thanked all present for their attendance and
generous support
.

LOI Dinner 21st May 2014
Wednesday 21sy May the Shoeburyness Lodge of Instruction held its Annual Dinner at the Pipe of Port.  The evening, organised by Bro Kevin Blyther, was a great success, with our latest member, Bro Craig Bliss bringing along a friend; Luke Fisher, so hopefully a candidate in the making.  The evening saw 19 of us wine and dine and enjoy each others company and a big thank you to Bro Kevin for expertly organising the evening, a job I think he can do again next year.

Steward's Night 12th May 2014
Monday 12th May was the climax of a lot of hard work by W Bro Roy Bryant and his team of stewards.  Bro Ian Hunt assumed the chair as Worshipful Master, Bro Tony Oliver as Junior Warden, Bro David O'Neill as Senior Deacon, Bro Tony Lowe as Junior Deacon, Bro Alan Honey as Inner Guard and Bro Craig Bliss as candidate; all the other officers were ably filled by Past Masters.

Brother Ian and his officers conducted a second degree ceremony which they should all be rightly proud of.  The Lodge DC W Bro Bruce Mapson congratulated the brethren and W Bro Lee Taylor, on behalf of the guests, advised the Worshipful Master that in his last job of a Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies he had attended something like 150 meetings over the last 3 years and that any Lodge would have been proud to have produced what Bro Ian and his officers had today.  Bro Ian thanked all present, particularly W Bro Bryant who had opened his home for additional rehearsals.

Following the close of the meeting the assembled Brethren enjoyed a complimentary chicken curry, rice, Bombay potatoes and naan bread in the Maplin Suite.

Chapter Meeting 7th May 2014
Wednesday 7th May was the last Chapter meeting of the Masonic year.  The meeting was honoured with the presence of our APGP E Comp David Branch, his DC E Comp Dan Heath and escorting Stewards E Comp's Bob Newman and Darren Bartlett.

Sadly there was no exaltee again, however, the companions were treated to a talk by E Comp Robert Whittingham, our ADC, titled 'Who's Who'.  This was a very interesting and informative talk with an abundance of information and was greatly received by the Companions.  E Comp Branch also congratulated E Comp Robert and said it was better to hear it for a second time as there was so much content one can't possibly digest all the information on the first hearing.

Following the talk the elections for the officers for the ensuing year took place with E Comp Derek Goodyear being elected MEZ, E Comp Geoff Singer H. and E Comp Ken Jordan J. and Comp Jim Parker as Treasurer.

Following the meeting 27 Companions enjoyed a very convivial festive board.

Ladies Night, April 2014
Saturday 12th April 2014 was the climax to W Bro Martin Sanderson's second spell as Worshipful Master of Shoeburyness Lodge as 94 people joined him and his fiancee Jenni in the beautiful Jubilee Suite for their Ladies Festival.
The evening was expertly overseen by W Bro Richard Jordan who, resplendent in a red tail coat, acted as Toast Master for the very first time.

After wining and dining Bro Keith Hudson proposed a humorous and very entertaining toast to the Ladies, W Bro Robert Mount then presented Jenni with a gift of a watch from the members of the Lodge and Jenni then responded on behalf of all the Ladies present.
W Bro Trevor Jewell proposed the toast to the President, W Bro Martin, in his own inimitable style and W Bro Martin duly replied.
A well supported raffle raised much needed funds for the RNLI, our Master list for the year.
Following the formal part of the evening all present were royally entertained by the singer Mr Paul Jerome and even Jenni took to the mike for a duet with Paul.
Sadly the wonderful evening came to an end at midnight with W Bro Martin justly thanking the staff at Saxon Hall for looking after us at this wonderful evening. Back next July for Martin and Jenni's wedding?  We'll have to wait and see.

March 2014 Meeting
Wednesday March 12th was the last meeting of the Masonic year for the Lodge, having only 4 meetings a year now makes the year pass even quicker.
The meeting started by paying our respects to our friend and Brother W Bro Lionel Shurmur who passed away on 22nd February, a brave, moving and at times humorous eulogy was paid to his Father by W Bro Robert Shurmur.

Following the minutes the Lodge was called off and Celia Riley and Moira McCann were welcomed into the Lodge.  Celia Riley gave the Brethren present a short presentation on the work and aims of 'A Peaceful Place' a centre specialising in helping younger people with dementia.  It was then with very great pleasure that W Bro Robert Shurmur presented Celia Riley with a cheque for £2,000 being the total of his Masters List to which Celia thanked the Brethren for their generous donation.

Once the Lodge was called back on Bro Craig Bliss was passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft by the ADC W Bro Roy Bryant in fine form. The abridged 2nd Degree Tracing Board was delivered to the pleasure of all present by W Bro Robert Mount.
As is the custom at the March meeting the Lodge was opened and closed in all three degrees and the third degree closing always is interesting to watch, tongue firmly in cheek, and today was no exception.

So all in all another successful Masonic year draws to a close with W Bro Trevor Jewell elected as our new Master we look forward to October for the start of another new year.

February 2014 Meeting
Wednesday 12th February 2014 was an important day in Freemasonry and particularly  Shoeburyness Lodge as another man was initiated into our wonderful fraternity. W Bro Richard Jordan was afforded the privilege by the Worshipful Master W Bro Martin Sanderson, of initiating his candidate now Bro Craig Bliss. The Ancient Charge was expertly delivered by W Bro Robert Shurmur who was standing in for the poorly Bro Kevin Blyther. Interestingly the last Bro W Bro Richard had the privilege to initiate was in fact W Bro Robert Shurmur some 16 years previously, who incidentally was W Bro Richards candidate.

The meeting was also pleased to support the Provincial Grand Masters new initiative of donating the charity column and the raffle to the new relief chest in aid of the UK flood victims.

Christmas Meal 2013
The festive season started on the 4th December when 24 members and partners attended Spaghetti Junction, Chalkwell, for  a Christmas supper. Good food, good company, great conversation and the odd glass insured  the evening went extremely well, with everyone enjoying the festivities.

Next event, Sunday lunch, in February date and venue to be announced shorty.

Very best Christmas  wishes

Bro Ian Hunt

Celebration and Extravaganza
Wednesday 13th November 2013 was a special day in the history of Shoeburyness Lodge, for it was exactly 50 years to the day W Bro Norman Chaplin PPJGW was initiated into the Lodge.  W Bro Cliff Thoms, our APGM, presented W Bro Norman with his 50 years in Freemasonry Certificate together with a personal letter from the RW Provincial Grand Master John Webb.

W Bro Cliff spoke on W Bro Normans long and distinguished career within the Lodge and wished him many more to come.  W Bro Norman commented that he hadn't been a regular attendee since the loss of his beloved Dorothy, but now found himself wanting to come out more and may even make the occasional visit to Lodge of Instruction.
Our very own Worshipful Master, W Bro Martin Sanderson, on behalf of all the members, thanked W Bro Norman for all his hard work and dedication over the last 50 years and had much pleasure in presenting him with a very fine bottle of scotch.

Prior to that the Lodge was very pleased and proud to host the first 'Talking Heads....The Next Step into The Royal Arch' presentation outside of the great metropolis of London.
The team consisting of W Bro Mike Baker, W Bro Jamie Ingham-Clark and W Bro Graeme Lovett ably supported by V W Bro Chris Frankland Dept Met G Supt, V W Bro Chris Clark Asst Met G Master and W Bro Mark Perkins Met Inspector.

The presentation takes the form of a short 40 minute play in a question and answer dialogue between two brethren and historical facts are added by the narrator, even the Lodge Secretary has a small role.
The presentation was received with great enthusiasm by those present and has even resulted in 3 enquirers.

Following the play V W Bro Chris Frankland was pleased to hand over a cd of the text to W Bro Ian Gorman Dep Prov G Supt offering support and assistance in Essex setting up its own 'Talking Heads' team.

After a full Lodge agenda some 90 Brethren enjoyed a sumptious festive board in the beautiful jubilee Suite at Saxon Hall.

Lodge Supper Club on Wednesday 14th August 2013 The Fahrenheit Bar and Grill
What a very good night, with excellent company and food. If you missed either of the first two Supper Club nights, watch this space and make a date of the next evening in October (date to be confirmed).
I know it may sound a little premature, but the Supper Club for Christmas will be marked by a return to Spaghetti Junction and in the season of good will, the ladies are invited!
The evening will take place in late November or early December, depending on numbers. You will appreciate that all good restaurants
are booked well in advance at this time of the year, so if you are interested please let me know ASAP, it may well mean that we have to restrict numbers, so first come first served.
Bro. Ian Hunt

Sunday Lunch
on Sunday 21st July 2013 at Saxon Hall
26 members, partners and friends, gathered for Sunday lunch on 21st July
at Saxon Hall.  We sat down to an excellent three courses, silver service
served lunch, appreciated by all who attended.
On a personal note it was particularly nice to see Lionel looking so well.
The census of opinion was that this should not be an isolated event,
so please watch this space.   Bro. Ian Hunt
